Volcano Climbing

In January this year I walked up Volcán Santa María, near Xela, in Guatemala. We’d actually planned to climb the highest peak in Central America: Tajamulco. But the day before we were due to leave, Quetzaltrekkers told us the communities that lived on the mountain were in the middle of a violent dispute over control of scarce water resources. Unfortunate (for them, and to a lesser extent, us) but Santa María still ended up being well worth it.
